Reflections on Restoration Work
By Samantha Panti
I was able to attend a couple of volunteer events held by South Bay Parkland Conservancy thanks to a club at Leuzinger High School called the Green Alliance. Both occasions were at the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt, and we had a great time!
Restoration work can be quite challenging at times, but it is extremely satisfying. Actually being out there and seeing how the volunteer coordinators at SBPC identified native plants and weeds really amazed me. I definitely learned something new each time that I went, and even found a sense of peace in the work.
Having the opportunity to play a part in restoring native habitats has opened up new opportunities that I never really considered for my future. There are wildlife biologists, conservation scientists, and so many more positions that involve being outdoors or helping wildlife. I am a huge animal lover, and I appreciate the perspective that SBPC events have offered.
The Green Alliance is a student-led enterprise that is attached to the Environmental Careers Academy at Leuzinger High School. Students have the chance to get engaged in several initiatives, including running a farmer’s market out of the school garden, facilitating the operation of a campus-wide recycling program, and participating in events hosted by external partners (such as SBPC). Students also have the chance to hold paid internship positions; for instance, this year, I have the privilege of interning with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. I think the Green Alliance truly allows students to take their learning outside of the classroom, and I am glad that I can be involved!
