CITIZENS FOR SOUTH BAY TREES
More trees. More shade. Stronger neighborhoods.
Citizens for Trees is a community-driven initiative of the South Bay Parkland Conservancy working to protect, grow, and sustain the urban tree canopy in the neighborhoods we call home.
Trees cool our streets, provide shade, support wildlife, improve air quality, and make our communities healthier and more beautiful. But a strong urban forest does not happen on its own. It takes thoughtful planning, long-term care, strong public policy, and people who are willing to get involved.
Our Mission:
We are a community-driven initiative dedicated to protecting, growing, and sustaining healthy urban forests in the neighborhoods we call home. We advocate for equitable canopy coverage, thoughtful replanting, and long-term stewardship of trees—past, present, and future. Through education, policy, and grassroots action, we work to ensure every neighborhood benefits from shade, biodiversity, and natural beauty for generations to come.
FROM ADVOCACY TO ACTION
Citizens for Trees grew out of years of local advocacy around tree preservation, replacement, and urban forestry policy.
That work matters. But we also want to create more ways for residents to take part directly.
We have begun with community tree planting and are now working to build a model that can grow across the South Bay — identifying places that need trees, working with cities and residents, organizing volunteers, protecting existing trees, and helping newly planted trees thrive.
Our goal is simple: move beyond awareness and turn community support for trees into meaningful action.
PLANTING IS ONLY THE BEGINNING
A healthy urban forest depends on what happens before and after planting, too.
It means caring for young trees, protecting mature trees, replacing trees that are lost, identifying neighborhoods that need more canopy, and making sure residents have a voice in the process.
Citizens for Trees is focused on three simple areas:
Grow.
Identify places where trees are needed and support thoughtful community planting.
Protect.
Advocate for existing public trees, responsible pruning, appropriate replacement, and strong urban forestry practices.
Care.
Build a culture of stewardship so newly planted trees survive and mature trees remain healthy.
GET INVOLVED
You don’t need to be a tree expert to help.
You may notice a block with almost no shade.
You may know of a tree that was removed and never replaced.
You may want more trees in your neighborhood.
You may simply want to spend a Saturday helping plant something that will still be here decades from now.
That is exactly the kind of participation Citizens for Trees wants to build.
