Planting CA Native Plants
Did you plant any CA native plants this season? There's still time!
Consider these factors
the size/shape of your space
amount of sunlight or shade
irrigation
Also think about if you want tall bushier plants or lower ground cover plants. Do you want them to bloom year-round? Or are you looking to help certain pollinators?
Here are two SBPC favorites!
Seacliff buckwheat, Eriogonum parvifolium & Narrowleaf Milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis
Seacliff buckwheat, Eriogonum parvifolium
The El Segundo Blue Butterfly is dependent on the seacliff buckwheat plant. It's the ONLY host plant for the ESB. Seacliff buckwheat is a coastal evergreen shrub found on hillsides, dunes and sea bluffs. It has been wiped out by development, and invasive plants such as ice plant. SBPC plants Seacliff buckwheat on the Esplanade Bluffs for birds and other pollinators including the ESB.
Narrowleaf Milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis
Narrowleaf Milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) is a flowering perennial best known for the Monarch butterflies it will attract into the garden. Narrowleaf milkweed is an important host plant for Monarch Butterflies in California, attracting them and hosting their caterpillars. It's also great for other pollinators including native bees.
Convert YOUR yard into native habitat
Help establish, expand and link habitats for pollinators like the El Segundo blue butterfly by joining our Certified California Native Habitat program. Native habitats are critical for preserving biodiversity. Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds depend on it! They provide a great learning experience through research, planting, and maintenance. Native habitats require little or no watering and eliminate the need for fertilizers and pesticides.
